Standing today at the veteran cemetery in Lake Worth made my world stop for a few moments. What am I doing here? Why are we here today? As the Navy officers conducted the military funeral honors ceremony on Thursday may 30th 2024 with respect to their fellow veteran. They folded the flag 13 times, representing the 13 original colonies of the United States, in the 90 degree temperature of Florida. Twenty or so friends of the deceased showed up, carpooling from their apartment complex giving respect to a neighbor and friend.
In Jewish teaching we call this a "mess Mitzvah," a death of a person who has no relatives locally to attend the funeral. They took this seriously and wanted to be part of this mitzvah, showing respect and dressing up for the funeral as a group. Three of the veteran's friends spoke warmly and with compassion about his relationship with them and the life he made for himself over the years.
I sang Psalm 23 in Hebrew and English and gave a small eulogy for a veteran I did not know. However, these friends were hard of walking and a few walkers clustered on the walkways, paying their last respects. Singing the last verse of the kaddish, Ushah shalom, He-G-d who makes peace with all of Israel, showed me the unity of this small crowd of Jews in Florida.
This was only made possible a week before when I got a phone call from the veteran's brother with the help and information from Rabbi Estrin of Aleph. The veteran served for twenty years in the Navy leaving behind two siblings and many nieces and nephews. Showing up for Jewish holidays in the local Synagogue and shabbat services. Now they needed a Rabbi to conduct the funeral services in the National Veteran Cemetery. I felt privileged and honored to conduct a service for this Jewish veteran, giving the family closure at this time. The family live in Jerusalem and Maryland and are elderly and unable to attend his final farewell. Well wishes and kaddish will be said in his memory by the devoted family from afar.
May the neshama-soul of Menachem Mendel ben Yaakov find a resting place in Gan Eden.
